Topic Title: 5-HTP and B vitamins
| | "5-HTP and B vitamins" , Sat 23 Feb 05:33
Hi,
I am new to this forum. I was told by a nutritional specialist that I should take vitamin B12 and folic acid with 5-HTP, as they help the conversion to serotonin. However, I have read that B6 is needed, but must not be taken at the same time - now I am really confused!!
I find I can feel worse after 5-HTP - more panicky etc, and I wonder if this is due to a need for certain B vits. I do feel better if I take a B complex with it. Has anyone else found this??
All the best
Sue

What brand of 5htp are you taking? I have been taking Nature's way 5htp with b6 and c for a little over 2 years with great success. In the beginning, I did take Natrol brand without the b6 and it did not work as well. I recommend taking a good b vitamin with the 5htp.

Hi DuPont,
I am taking Tri-Medica 5-HTP, cos it doesn't contain stearic acid which I react to.
I will try a B supplement more regularly - I don't take too much as it can upset my stomach.......what a sad case!!

Hi, I have also n oticed feelings of increased anxiety immediately after taking the 5-HTP which later subside and then I feel much calmer. I don't know if others have this experience. I haven't tried b6 with 5-HTP mainly because, as you explained, I have read conflicting stories about whether to take it or not at the same time. It sounds like the B6 helped you to calm down - I may try it - would you suggest that from your experience? Also, I"m confused as to whether I should take l-tyrosine at teh same time as 5-HTP or at all with it, as a friend today told me if I"m taking 5-HTP then I don't need to take L-tyrosine - as they do the same thing. This is confusing! I"m going to a naturopathic doctor next week to discuss all this so if I can add some light to this discussion after that I will -but for now- any advice would help!

L-tyrosine is a nonessential amino acid (protein building block) that the body synthesizes from phenylalanine, another amino acid. It is also the precursor of several neurotransmitters, including L-dopa, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. L-tyrosine, through its effect on neurotransmitters, may affect several health conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, depression, and other mood disorders.
5-HTP has been shown to increase brain dopamine, noradrenaline activity, and serotonin. Serotonin is a key brain neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation (anti-anxiety and antidepressant), impulse control (inhibits aggression and obsessive compulsive disorders, pain control and sleep).
I would suggest taking 5htp along with a good b vitamin or multi. If that doesn't work for you, you can always add the l-tyrosine.

I am new to this 5HTP thing and have been doing some reading on it. But I am finding contradictions. One article I read said to take Vit. B6 with the 5HTP. Another article said to take them 6 hours apart. If anyone out there has some answers let us know. I am also finding out that I am retaining fluids - is it possibly from the 5HTP? Also what dosages do I need to take for both the 5HTP and the Vit. B6? I am trying the 5HTP for my PMS symptoms. Thanks for any help.

I am new to this computer thing so I hope I am doing this right? I wanted to comment on the retaining water comment you made. I used 5htp for two months and felt more "normal" than I ever did in my whole life. (I have fibromyalgia)But I started retaining water and then I read somewhere that 5htp might cause kidney problems? Anyone know anything about this? I have stopped using it for now.
