Topic Title: Zoloft vs. 5-HTP?

Has anyone been on Zoloft or Paxil and than switched later to 5-HTP? I'd like to hear any stories. Also, did any of you gain weight on the prescribed antidepressants? Did 5-HTP work just as well for you as Zoloft or the Paxil? Thanks. Pauline

Hiya Pauline,
I used to take 30mg of Paxil (Seroxat in England).
Yes I gained weight but I also had numerous side effects.
So far 5-HTP is helping me to cope really well. The hardest thing is to find out what doesage suits you best. I know that peoples doesage can very from 50mg to 1000mg.
I know one thing, having taken Paxil/Seroxat for 11months and having found 5-HTP - I would NEVER go back to Paxil/Seroxat.
Cheers
Nicky.

Greetings Nickie: Thank you for your speedy reply. May I ask, have you noticed any weight gain while on the 5-HTP? How long have you been on 5-HTP? Pauline

Hiya Pauline,
Well, I have to say I am a little baffled (not worried) at the moment.
I think it was in September - October 2001 I started taking 200mg of 5-HTP. Initially, I actually lost weight, not sure why, maybe it was the weight still coming off that I put on when taking Paxil/Seroxat. I can remember reading though, that 5-HTP can be used to aid weight loss. I think it was recommeded that you take it a hour or so before you are due a meal.
I then took a break from 5-HTP over the Christmas/New Year period. I am not a big drinker by any means but after having a few bad experiences of taking Paxil/Seroxat and drinking I am very wary of what the effects alcohol and tablets can be so I stopped taking 5-HTP for a little while.
As the weeks went on I could really start to tell the difference in myself and I was really starting to feel bad. I started back on 5-HTP but found that I needed to up my doesage. I am not sure if the 2 go together but I seemed to be eating more chocolate than I would normally. As I have said, I am not sure if the 2 go together because I had let myself get quite low and so I am still wondering if it is my body wanting the chocolate as a quick fix to make me feel better or that I haven't got my doseage right yet. Either way, I am not worried because I can tell that I am feeling much better in myself. I have certainly not put the weight on like I did with Seroxat. Then I was even eating healthier etc. to try and combat the weight, but nothing seemed to work.
I feel that the hardest thing when taking 5-HTP is finding the right doseage that suits you best. I have just upped my Tyrosine dose this morning to 200mg and I am still taking 300mg of 5-HTP before I go to bed so watch this space........
Cheers Pauline.
Nicky.
