"discontinuing 5-htp" , Tue 1 Jan 17:13

My event-triggered depression is much better and I'm ready to stop taking the 5-HTP. I've tried researching it but haven't come up with any answers. If you've had experience with weaning/discontinuing 5-HTP I"d be grateful for any suggestions you may have.

You only need common sense !!! Discontinued 5htp slowly and reducing the dosage gradually ... and one fine day youŽll wake up
and find out that you aren't "addicted" or "depending" on any medication !!!
Good luck and God Bless !!!

I don't think it is that easy. I've been trying to cut down on the amount of 5htp that I take and trying to wean off it slowly, but I just don't feel as good. And it reminds me of something a psychiatrist friend once told me. Consider depression like a disease such as diabetes, you may have to take medication for the rest of your life.

And why is that? My physciatrist told me the same thing. I don't get it.

Although depression runs in my family, a medication for a condition I have came with the side effect of causing severe depression. (I've since then quit that medicatin.) So, if a medication triggered an imbalance in my brain, thus causing depression, and I've never suffered from depression before, then how is that considered chronic? Why would I, or anyone else for that matter, suffer from a permanent imbalance in the brain?

Once depressed, always depressed? There is no cure for depression?

Perhaps you or someone can shed some light on the subject. I just don't understand.

Oh, one more question. Have you ever experienced a loss of effectiveness on 5-htp and had to stop for a while and switch back?

Thanks.

Donna

If someone had a definitive cure for depression they would be rich!! I think depression is something that I will have to deal with the rest of my life. It seems to me that all the information out there is directed at preventing a re-occurrence of depression, rather than actually curing it. I don't know why, maybe the imbalance can't be reversed.

I have never experienced a loss of effectiveness of 5htp.

You said that you never experienced a loss of effectiveness. However, I stumbled on an older posting and you said "it's back". So, how come the depression come back??

Did you stop taking it, or did you lower your dosage?

I've been on 50 mgs. for 2 days now. I think it's working. I really want this to work for me. I'm sooo tired of dealing with the ups and down of my moods. It's like I'm on a wild roller coaster and my poor husband is along for the ride.

Thanks.

Donna

I was on a lower dosage and it was just before Christmas. It was all the stress and disillusionment of the holiday. I'm much better now that the holidays are over. I seem to get caught up in making everyone else happy for Christmas, and meeting others expectations, and the materialism of it all just makes me crazy!!
The true meaning just gets lost and I hate that. The pressure to keep with tradition is for me depressing, because I can't be true to myself or my beliefs. It really sucks! So now I'm concentrating on the New Year. It's going to be great!!

I hear what you're saying.

I too used to get caught up in making everyone else happy except myself.

I've now learned that, although may sound selfish, "I" come first and I need to make "me" happy and quit worrying about everyone else. The reality of it is, regardless of how much you try to please everyone, you can't -- and someone "always" has something to say anyway. So, I gave up.

I also order pizza for Christmas Eve instead of cooking and stressing with old tradition. I get to enjoy the family that way and it keep's me calm.

Yes, I too feel it's going to be a good year -- especially now that I've found 5-htp!

Have you ever sunk into depression during the two years you've been on it beside the xmas episode?

Hope it works as well for me as it does for you.

Thanks.

Donna

Being a people pleaser is still one of my biggest problems. I'm also a perfectionist. I'm working on these areas of my life.

I don't remember any other depressive episodes during the past 2 years. I do remember a lot of stress, that caused a couple panic attacks. That was when I started taking Kava Kava, and went back to my therapist. It didn't last long, maybe a month. Once I realized I had no control over what I was stressing about I could just let it go. Now I remind myself all the time that I am not in control, only God is. It helps to stop myself as soon as the negative thoughts start and just say God will take care of it, or God will provide.

I guess we both know there is more to it than just medication we have to also change the way we think.

Gosh, you sound just like me. :) -- perfectionist, people-pleaser.

And you're right. Turn it all over to God when the bad times hit. He WILL take care of it for us.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Keep it up!

Thanks, DuPont. I was under the impression it took more than just common sense, as well. I talked to an herbalist and he said go very, very slowly - and to see how it goes. I"m keeping my fingers crossed. I never had a problem with depression before the event and I'm hoping I can get back to that.
Thanks again.

Medication is only ONE aspect of the treatment for depression and sooner or later most of the cases had to stop using chemical
or herbal substances in order to produce the RIGHT mood naturally in their bodies , it is only a very few cases of sufferers/patients may need to take medication lifelong .
