"Sam-e and 5-htp" , Fri 21 Dec 14:57

Has anyone taken Sam-e with 5 htp. Sam-e works great, yet has a tendency at the beginning until your body gets us to it, to cause paranoia, agressiveness, anger and hyperness (mild versions compared to Wellbutrin). I'm thinking that from what I've read, 5-htp has a sedating effect. So I feel it would counteract the side effects of the Sam-e.

I notice when I take St. John's which is also a seritonin drug at the same time I take Sam-e, I don't get the side effects. Hope 5-htp will do the same.

Anyone knowledgeable about this?

Thanks.

Donna

Hello Donna,

Sorry that I don't have an answer for your question, but can you give me some feedback on the Sam-e? I just bought some because the my SJW did not work. If it worked, how long did it take? I am scared to try the "real" presription stuff.

Thanks,

Ron

Hi Ron.

My experience is great with Sam-e. I did alot of research prior to trying it. There's a great website on it. Type Delphi where the key word is, then click on the Delphi website which will bring you straight there. At that point, type Sam-e and it will show a forum on the subject.

Back to feedback on Sam-e -- I experienced relief within a day. Many others have also. Some experience relief within days. ONLY use Nature Made. You can get it at Walmart. It actually has more Sam-e in it than the box says.

When I tried it for the first time when I was severely depressed (seeing grey), I'm not exaggerating when I say I one day, all of a sudden, felt the grey cloud literally lift and I started to see light again. This occured after 3 days of Sam-e. It DOES vary with everyone. However, the majority experience fast results.

It does cause a loose stoole. That's about it aside from the other sides I mentioned.

I take St. John's now (1800 mgs.) and I take only 200 -400 mgs. of Same every 4-5 days to give me a boost. The St. John's got rid of my depression but I had little motivation. Sam-e gives you the drive to do things and it usually stays in my system for several days.

Taking Sam-e alone, it gets really expensive.

If St. John's stops working on me, I'll temporarily go on 5-htp along with the Sam-e for about 2-3 months, then go back on the St. John's.

Any other questions, let me know.

Good luck.

P.S. -- oh yeah, forgot to mention. Sam-e lasted 3 months for me and then quit working. Your body seems to get used to it quickly -- another reason why I chose to go the every 4-5 day route along with a seritonin herb. Many others do that too.

In addition, when you initially go on it, you will get a wicked headache (actually it's in your neck). It's more difficult to get rid of it after you've developed the headache. So what I do is take 2 tylenol every time I take Sam-e until my body gets used to it -- usually within 5 days.

Hello. How would rate SAMe along side of 5-HTP, GABA or St. Johns wort, Calm-HTP? Which one would you think would be best for relieving symptoms of both anxiety and depression? I'm currantly on Zoloft, and want to get off this as it is causing me to gain weight. Thanks, Pauline [email protected]

Sam-e is the best for a "short term fix". If you are severely depressed or just want your depression to go away almost immediately, then take Sam-e. You start with 400 mgs. However, your body eventually get's used to it after about a month. You then have to keep increasing at 200 mgs. intervals. Each time you increase, it usually lasts for a month. You should only take up to 1600 mgs. After that, your stool gets too loose (side effect) and it gets too expensive. It does NOT relieve anxiety. It actually, at first, causes anxiety, nervousness. To combat that, I took kava kava.

In my opinion, long term, I believe St. John's standardized capsules by GNC is the best out of all of them. It works for a long, long time, and has the best and longest track record according to studies. It also helps with anxiety. I'm much calmer now then I used to be. I suffer from anxiety attacks. They are now vertually gone.

5-HTP was just not for me. Made me fogged in the head. Did not relieve my depression. But then I could only take 100 mgs. Anything more and I felt like Sh--t. Others say it works.

I've done much research on all of them. As I said, Sam-e is wonderful if you need a short term fix or until your meds start working. But St. John's has the most positive reviews from people and has been studied the longest.

I'd, personally go with St. John's. But remember, everyone is different. What may work on one may not work on another. However, St. John's works for most.

Good luck. Any questions, let me know.

Donna
