Topic Title: First time user questions

Hello,
I suffer from anxiety/depression and it usually lasts 2-3 months. It is nasty with all of the symptoms but the worst is insonomia. I have a busy job so I can't afford to be very drowsy (due to medicine) or lack of sleep. Will 5-HTP help me? If so, when should I take it especially for sleeping? The bottle reccomends twice a day @ 60MG. Can I take a conventional mild sleeping pill if with 5-HTP if it does not work for sleeping? any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Robert

i use 5-htp and i think it helps sleep a bit because it lifts the depression, which causes insomnia. it does not directly cause me to be drowsy though. it actually makes me kinda hyper. i use kava kava to relax also, but even that does not put me to sleep. to guarantee my sleep, there is only one solution--ativan 1mg.

Hello, I take 100mg of 5-HTP in the morning, when I get up and then another 100mg around 3pm. I also take 2 kava kava around dinner time. Kava works pretty well with helping me to relax. I don't have any problem sleeping. Exercise is a great way to help your sleep, too. Just make sure you finish 3-5 hours before you go to bed. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Hello,
Will the 5-HTP make me very drowsy at work? Any idea if I can use a sleeping pill if it does not help my sleep? Thanks so much!

It's all very subjective. The only side effect I have experienced is drowsiness. I take my 5htp with a cup of coffee in the morning and I don't feel drowsy at all. Then at 3 pm I take another dose and I'm in bed by 10 pm. I really don't think you'll need a sleeping pill. Maybe you should take a low dose in the morning and a higher dose in the afternoon. I agree with Hiedi, Kava Kava really helps to relax me.
