"unusual question" , Fri 7 Dec 11:36

I have been taking 5-HTP for around 6 months with great results. Lately, howver, I find myself searching for a specific word during a conversation. I do much public speaking and have developed a reputation for being articulate. The problem has gotten so bad that it is significantly effcting my speaking and I have considered seeing my Dr.
I am wondering if this could be caused by the 5-HTP. Has anyone else experienced this?
Thank you.

Well I used to have that problem. Mine was mostly from depression, and anxiety, mostly anxiety. But if you don't think that's it maybe you could try ginko biloba for memory, or maybe you just have so much on your mind that you're at a loss for words. Holidays have a way of doing that, what with so much going on. Hope it improves for you though. ;)

My event triggered depression is much better and I hope to decrease and go off of the 5-HTP after the holidays are over. Is it your feeling that the "word loss" is due to the depression or the 5-HTP or other serotonin increasing meds?

Thank you for your replies!!!

I think it is caused by the chemical change/imbalance of depression.

Have you ever heard of EPA/DHA? It was recommended to me to combat the "word loss" problem.

Essential fatty acids. I recently bought some but haven't been taking them with any regularity. I'm just re-reading one of the books I have on treating depression naturally. I know that it also recommends the Fatty acids for brain function.

I had taken SJW for about 3 months and I feel the same thing. I am having difficulty communicating verbally. I couldn't find the right words quickly enough, so the sentences sometimes come out of my mouth jumbled and incoherent. I stop taking SJW for about a week now since I am no longer depressed, but I still feel this symptom. I hope this is not permanent, I wouldn't want to speak like this for the rest of my life.

I often find my self searching for a word. I thought it was the depression, cause when I was really depressed I had problems with concentration, memory and completing a thought. I have found that taking Gingko Biloba regularly really helps, even though I still get stuck sometimes. I have found this to be one of the more frustrating aspects of depression. Before I used to be a very quick thinker, the words would just flow, now I feel like I struggle to complete a sentence. Looking back it started when I was pregnant. My depression became really bad postpartum. Its been over 2 years, the depression is better because of the 5htp, but I get the feeling something is still NOT right...

I am on the PTSD newsgroup and found a member taking Rosavin (rhodliola rosea) saying it was working like a charm. I ordered some for the PTSD daughter and we are on the second day. She had been on Paxil - didn't like feeling drugged, celexa, same thing, and stuggles going to college classes for all the reasons the PTSD lays on her. I hope this comes through for her. Here's just one website for it. There are others that don't sell the product.
