5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is the precursor to serotonin, and it works by increasing the serotonin available to your brain. You have probably heard of the amino acid tryptophan, well from what I have read the body breaks down tryptophan to 5htp and then the 5htp is broken down to serotonin. The 5htp that you can get at almost all drug stores in the U.S. and online at http://www.iherb.com/iherb/store.html is derived from the Griffonia Bean. I don't think you can buy tryptophan in the U.S. There are a few people in this forum who take 5htp and SJW together. I believe that they would work great together.
SJW supposedly works like the antidepressants known as SSRIs, by increasing the availability of serotonin in brain synapses by blocking the reuptake mechanism--where the serotonin is removed from the synapse, thereby leaving more serotonin available to the brain.
So 5-HTP provides the raw materials for the body to make new serotonin, and SJW prevents excess serotonin from being naturally deactivated by blocking the reuptake mechanism.
Here is a great website about 5htp http://www.smart-publications.com/books/5htp/toc.html
5htp alone is what worked for me!! I hope this helped, good luck finding what works for you!!

Okay...here's what I found. Put this address in your browser's address line, or just click on the link itself...will take you right there:

It's a reply from "txchick" dated/posted Fri. 3, Aug. There's quite a few replies here, but as yet she's 2nd to last, just above DuPont. The importance of seritonin, however, I'm not sure. More searching to do.

Good question! I'm trying to read all the posts in this forum to discover the answer, but so far no luck. DuPont appears to be in the know about this. WHAT IS 5HTP and what's it's purpose? If only in general...
