Topic Title: 5htp - sickness
| | "5htp - sickness" , Wed 24 Oct 02:53
I suffer from terrible morning anxiety. I wake about 5am, heart racing and terrible anxiety. I have tried 5htp for a couple of weeks but find no difference. I tried increasing the dose last thing at night 150mg, but I had terrible diarrhoea. I have noticed a slight difference when taking 100mg during the day, but I think its because my anxiety seems to wear off in the afternoon. Does any body have any ideas?
I would love to hear from anyone who has anxiety just in the morning. Its at its worst when I wake and progressively gets better during the day.

Waking up around 5 each morning with racing heart and anxiety, soulds only to familiar to me. I experienced this "years" ago, when first diagnosed with hypoglycemia. This is because night-time fasting levels of glucose become very low between 3-8am. Low blood sugar can cause these symptoms. Try an experiment along with the natural suppliments you are taking. Cut WAY back on simple carbs like: desserts, sugary foods, starches like potaotos, pasta, breads and cereal, AND try increasing you proteins and veggies. And most of all EAT a protein snack before bed, like some deli meat, cottage cheese and/or peanutbutter on whole grain crackers and have a "SMALL" glass of milk (milk contains good protein, but also has lactose which is a natural occurring sugar.) And with this, see if those am anxiety attacks don't go away. Doesn't hurt to try, you have nothing to lose. Pauline

Thank you for your reply.
I am going to try a change in diet and see if it makes any difference. I am not a depressive person and have never experienced morning anxiety before now. What you say makes a lots of sense as my diet isnt great. My Doctor says I am not depressed and cant explain my anxiety - which dissapears around 10am. I have always thought it was a physical rather than mental problem.
Thanks again!

Hello again from Arizona, USA. Just received your reply. You mentioned your anxiety is worse in the morning and than gets better around 10am. Question.? What time did you eat breakfast? If you did eat around 7-8am, this is enough time for you food to raise your blood sugar levels and make you feel better, as in my case and possibly yours, as discussed in previous mail. This is only one more confirmation that you could very well be hypoglycemic. As mentioned previously, I advised you on the hypoglycemic diet. Glad you are going to give it a try. So many people are undiagnosed or wrongly diagnosed in this area, as hypoglycemia and reative hypoglycemia are very common in many people to varying degrees. Happy trails and feel better soon. I too suffer anxiety in the morning. 5HTP has helped me with that. Right now I take 50mg 3 times during the day. I also take 10 mg of Buspar 2 times a day and 20 mg of Celexa before bed. I sleep well-a good quality sleep that I did not have before 5HTP.
Before 5 HTP I was taking 40 mg of Celexa and 30 mg. of Buspar daily plus something to sleep. My Dr. says he does not know anything about 5 htp, but he didn't tell me not to take it.
I'd like to hear from anyone else taking 5htp along with antidepressants. I'd really like to take more of 5htp and less of antidepressants. I'm waiting for my health food store to get me an order of the enteric coated kind. the 150mg I'm taking right now gives me diahrrea.

Well, each of the medications you are taking do something different. Buspar works on serotonin receptors (among other things), 5htp increases serotonin in the brain and celexa keeps serotonin in the body longer than normal. My only suggestion would be to be careful of serotonin overload. If your anxiety starts to get worse cut back on the 5htp or celexa. I also read that 5htp increases melatonin in the brain in some instances by 200%, that is why you are sleeping better, and most people feel fatigued. If you increase your dose of 5htp you can probably stop the celexa all together.

I suggest trying a different brand. I use Nature's Way brand with b6 and c with great success. This brand is enteric coated so you should not have any stomach upset or diarrhea. Try changing brands and give it a couple more weeks. Up your dosage and take it with dinner. If that doesn't work you might want to try Kava Kava.

I did not have heart palpitations before, but I did a couple of months ago. Dr. wasn't sure if it was physical or anxiety, but I took Kava Kava and the Dr. gave me some medication and the palpitations have stopped, no problems since. Kava Kava is really good for anxiety.
