Topic Title: New to 5-HTP

hi everyone, i had been diagnosed with depersonlization disorder in 1989. Have tried every possible drug and alternate therepies but with no significant effect. About 2 weeks back i happened to come across this site and have been taking 900 mg of SJW since. However, the change is not significant. Just today i was about to get another bottle of SJW and was scanning this site for other brands when i came across 5-HTP. Just got a bottle of Nature's bounty as that was the only brand available at the CVS i went to. No idea how good this is.
The problem is that this disorder is a very rare problem and not much information on it is available even on the net. If any of you'll have any experience with it then please let me know on how you cope with it and if 5-HTP has had any significant effect. Also, which is the best brand to buy.
Thanks,
Sidjor

Hi Sidjor I am not 100% sure, but Depersonalization Disorder isn't one of the many symptoms of a particular psychiatric disorder ? Such as Major Depression or a specific Psychotic Condition (I donīt like to use certains psychiatric terms it is highly stigmatising )??? A person suffers from a Clinical Depression can have depersonalization symptoms !!! What was the reason that drove you to take SJW and 5HTP??? What are your physical(body) and psycological(state of mind or mood) signs of this condition that are bothering you ???

hi Alfa One, thanx for replying. I was diagnozed as having this disorder in 89...it was due to some seperation anxiety i suffered as a kid....the shrink also told me that that these symptoms by themselves is very rare...i do have symptoms of depression too like major confusion...anxiety, sad but the overriding feeling is of not being able to feel myself !!! Its very uncomfortable....have tried a no. of drugs and a bunch of alternative therapies but nothings helped....have been on 5htp since 2 days...started with 300mg yesterday and there seems to be some bit of an improvement...maybe it'll get better as the days go by....
thanx again..

yes, that's absolutely right...i can't express any of those emotions....and i really can't feel my own existence...i popped out of this state just like that in 89 and went back in in a few hours time. This happened 3 times and that's when i started seeing a psych. and was diagnosed..since then i've only gotten out of this state with Prozac in around 94. But i felt so good that i stopped taking it and went back in and subsequent experimentation with it yielded no results.
Why do u say that I'm in big trouble ? Do u know more about this problem and people with it ?

I have been some kind of depersonslisation state for short moments in the past during my darkest period of depression ,I was diagnosed from major depression many years ago . Iīve lost all my capability to "feel" it was dreafull and extremely excruxiating !!!

so, do u still have depersonalization or has it gone ?....depersonalization can be a symptom with depression but i think my depression is due to depersonalization....
if you've overcome the symptoms of depersonalization then how did u do it ?

Can you tell me more about separation anxiety? My daughter suffers from it, it is hard on both of us! She is only six but looking back she has had it from a very early age. I haven't talked to the school psychologist yet, I'm still trying some other techniques, but it looks like we maybe heading that way.

maybe i used the wrong word. it was actually seperation in my teens that got me very depressed and fearful..however, i believe i was always prone to this from early childhood but not sure of the reason why...i think if in childhood u believe ur parents may abandon you, probably because they've given u enough reason to think so, it can develop into this "seperation anxiety"...if ur daughter is very shy and uncomfortabe in social situations u need to take care that she is not faced with any kind of seperation from a loved one till she has completely developed her identity (which i think would be in her mid/late teens)....this is ofcourse completely from my own experience and understanding....
