"had to quit 5-HTP" , Mon 17 Sep 11:58

I was on 5-HTP for about two weeks at 50mg /day
(occasionally 100mg). I would take it in the
evening. It relieved depression and anxiety quite
a bit! I thought it was a wonder drug, until the
following side-effects kicked in:
a) daytime drowsiness
b) weak erection, delayed ejaculation
c) couldn't concentrate, felt stupid

Anyone else have these problems?
Was my dosage too high? Should I try Paxil
or Wellbutrin instead? Any suggestions would
be appreciated, even if you aren't a doctor.

Hi Sad Person , is me again .According to your first posts (5 and 6 of Sep.)you said that the 5htp was causing some restlessness but on the same time it relieved your anxiety and depression quite a bit ... after two weeks the opposite is happening , you felt daytime drowsiness ...but forgive me !!!
I think you are in the right direction !!! Since 5htp is suppose
to help regulate insomnia ... I think you are just starting to feel the effect of 5htp ?!?!?
About the problem of sexual performance you should give some more time and relax ... sex isnīt the whole of a personīs life!!!
There are still many beautifull things around us and we can still
enjoy them !!!
Donīt quit !!!yet !!!

yes, i experienced restlessness when i first
started taking it. that went away after the
first few days and then it started doing the
opposite--it made me profoundly relaxed.
it became a very effective anxiolytic for me.
but it made me too cloudy headed. i don't
know if i agree about the sex thing--i think
it would be hard to cure depression in the long
run if you can't have a decent orgasm. i think
that's an effective antidepressant in itself.

Hi Sad Person ,I agree with you, about a fulfilling sexual performance it does help to boost a personīs self-esteem , but the more a person pursuit the goal of a sexual climax the less one will get .Itīs like trying to catch a bird with bare hands...
what do you think ???

can't disagree with you there. you
can't try too hard--it doesn't work.

but if you're on serotonergic drugs
it doesn't work regardless of your effort.

well, i shouldn't say it doesn't work.
it works, it's just not as fun.

Sad to hear that 5-htp isnīt what you have expected ... from what Iīve heard and read about Paxil seems to diminish libido and
Welbutrin is a little better without impairing too much on sexual
performance .Many had claim that Paxil helps anxiety ,insomnia
and gain weight (craving carbohydrates).Since you are so sensitive to natural 5-htp you should report this to your doctor
and if he prescribe a pharmaceutical antidepressant it is prudent
to start with a very low dosage and slowly work it up if necessary . Goodluck !!!

My current doctor didn't even know what 5-HTP was!
So I'll need to see someone else if I want to tell
him my experience with 5-HTP side-effects. I'll
need to see a psychiatrist--not good because my
insurance doesn't cover that fully. I don't really
think doctors know more than what I learn just
reading stuff on the internet. I want a doctor who
will let ME tell HIM what drugs I need, and just
get him to write the script. They don't really know
what you need--it's a big crapshoot to them. I don't
believe in prescriptions. I think everything should
be over-the-counter.

I have been using 5HTP for about two months now and have noticed some of the same side effects. I have so far countered them quite successfully by:

a. Taking the 5HTP in the morning and at the sign of any drowsiness simply having a cup of tea or coffee, the drowsiness doesn't seem to return after the tea/coffee has worn off. Even very weak tea seems to be effective.
b. I must say it initially had the opposite effect on me. Now appears to be no effect, so it may just be a matter of time.
c.Didn't experience this but I would recommend DMAE and Huperzine A (they are somewhat analogous to 5HTP and SJW except that they work on the production and breakdown of Acetylcholine). For me they seem to increase my concentration span and even, although this could be purely subjective, increase my ability to deal with complex tasks.
