"can you help?" , Tue 11 Sep 03:38

Hello. I’m 20 years old and not depressed but I’m considering taking 5htp. Ive had it before a few months ago to help me sleep. I took a capsule in the evening and occasionally in the morning. I’m usually very shy and don’t have much to say to people I’m not close to but when I took the 5htp I became a lot more sociable and confident around people. Also when I start drinking alcohol I find it difficult to stop. When I was on the 5htp I had no problems stopping drinking whenever I chose to do so.

I am considering taking it for the following reasons:
i) Help me sleep
ii) Stop drinking so much
iii) Help me to socialise more when I start university (next week)

*I was considering taking it for the first 2/3 weeks of university to help overcome my low confidence and meet some friends.

My concern is I thought that your brain couldn’t make more seratonin- and once it runs out it means the cogs aren’t gonna work too well upstairs... I know 5htp is used as an anti-depressant, but surely this makes seratonin- meaning you'll run out sooner and in the long-term end up more depressed.

Is my concern right?
Also are my motives for taking 5htp suitable?

Hi Mrgo you have mentioned that 5-htp is helping you from controlling your alcool intake and you feel more confident in your social life , these are very positive things !!!
And about your sleep ??? Any improvement ???
About the wearing out of the serotonin levels , I think as long
as a person do not " Abuse" the medication it will not happen to
arrive at such a horrific situation ...!!!
So I think the rigth thing one can do , is to take as little as possible , just the minimum amount that can keep you going or perhaps taking a day off and a day on ... and everything will be
fine............ :)
From what i ´ve heard from your words you are not suffering from
depression so you may need a very low dosage to meet your needs ... and good luck to your university life !!!
