Topic Title: Important 5 - HTP Warning ?
| | "Important 5 - HTP Warning ?" , Mon 10 Sep 11:00
I have been trying to find correct and accurate information about 5-HTP. It seems one place says one thing, and another place says something else. I figured talking with people who use it is the best way to find out the truth about it.
I came across an article about 5-HTP from a VERY well known medical institution.
Please read it here
After you read the article please give your feelings about it. After I read it I became very scared about taking more than 50 mg. a day, yet I have read here that some take much more than that. I'd rather be safe than sorry. Thanks.

Thanks Dupont for those articles. Your dosage seems very high, aren't you concerned that you might be ripping a hole in your heart valves?

From the article you mentioned. Despite the potential dangers of 5-HT, most FDA-approved drugs to treat depression and obesity appear to be more toxic. At the time of this printing, we have not been able to verify whether 5-HT serotonin overload would cause fibrosis of the aortic valve and destruction of the heart muscle.
Of course I am worried about my heart. But from my research it is highly unlikely to happen from 5htp. And as more and more research is published about 5htp they are finding more health benefits.

You seem to know alot about 5htp I purchased the natures way as you described. I was wondering, are you male or female as I am a woman. I was wondering if you tolerate it better than most. I tried another kind and had that hot flushing feeling. I suffer from sever fatigue. I was wondering if you had that with your depression. I hardly even want to get motivated. The St. Johns wort fatigued me more. Will this do the same? please let me know before I start and I also am very sensitive to stimulants. Thank you and GOD BLESS US ALL. Especially since this terrible crisis. Of America.

Dupont, how long did it take for you to notice a differance in depression symptoms. And I just took my first one tonight. 50mg. to start with. I cry all the time. Hopefully this will help.

Well, to tell you the truth I didn't take the recommended dosage, I was feeling pretty desperate at the time, I had 10 pills in my hand, but only took 5, or 250 mg. I was surprised to feel different within an hour. Of course I don't recommend doing what I did but I would suggest that if you don't feel any changes with 50 mg slowly increase the amount that you take. For me the crying stopped and I could think more clearly. It helps to have someone to talk to also, a friend or therapist. I hope you are also taking other vitamins such as B6, B12 and your essential fatty acids. Sometimes I take Gingko Bilbo for my memory and concentration. The brand of 5htp that I take is Nature's Way and it contains B6 and c vitamins along with the 5htp. For me it has been a 2 yr long process and I still have some bad days.
