hi. I have had a sometimes very severe depression caused by accutane. My depression has often been made significantly worse by anti depressants. Paxil made me a little worse. Effexor made me suicidal. Wellbutrin in combination with Zyprexa maybe made me slightly more motivated but in general made me much worse.
Right now I am off medications. I am 7 days on 5-htp at 250mg a day. I am increasing to 350mg a day with also 600mg of st john's wort a day. I dont expect the st john's wort to work since it's best suited for mild and moderate depression. But I have read that st john's wort makes 5-htp more effective so that's why I am taking it.
I would just like to know when I may start to notice some improvement. I am able to minorly enjoy things and mind torture is very very mild now compared to when I was on meds but I am probably just like this due to being off meds. Therefor I am waiting for the 5-htp effect. Can it take another week maybe? thanks for reading. and my primary symptom is very very poor concentration with limited emotional ability and lack of ability to enjoy things as much as I should.

hi adam17,
since i too have been battling depression for a no. of years with no effect from conventional and other alternative therapies, i was wondering how u have been feeling. I too have started taking 5htp since about a week and its hard to say whether its working yet. i hope to hear from u soon.

hi, i just read on one of the links on this site to a 5-HTP site that SJW and 5-HTP shouldn't be mixed. I think u better check it out !!!

Are you still taking the accutane???
I don't think 5htp or sjw are very effective on sever depression.
However, I have read that it is safe to take up to 900 mg/day of 5htp. I take 250 mg 2x/day. For me the results were immediate, but I had moderate depression. Have you tried Ginko Bilboa for the concentration problem? It is suppose to be great for concentration and memory.
