"5hpt vs fen-phen" , Wed 22 Aug 13:36

Hello all,

I just registered today. I found this website while I was researching 5htp. My son has depression and he is now on celexa. It does improve quite a bit, but he still have a hard time going to sleep and getting in the morning and it is affecting his grades. I was considering asking his doctor changing his medicine to 5htp, after I read the following site: http://yarchive.net/med/5-htp.html , I am not sure I want to do this. This doctor is saying that 5htp could have the same problem as fen-phen. Can anyone go in this webpage to read about it and give me some feed back. He is also saying that a few companies now selling tryptophan supplements to doctors in the US. Anyone knows about that? I think tryptophan would be a better alternative if we can get it. If any of you live in the Orange County area in California and know of a doctor who has tryptophan for his patient, please let me know. By the way, you might be able to find Dr. Ray Sahalian's book on 5-HTP in your local library. I just got one today. Thanks! Hope to hear from you soon.

After reading the article you mentioned, it did give me a scare about taking the dosage of 5htp that I take on a daily basis. I take between 400 and 500 mg per day. Then I looked more closely at the article, it was written in 1996, and this website is just a collection of archive news articles, it also explains that medical information can get outdated quickly.

I then read some information from the book I usually fall back on http://www.smart-publications.com/books/5htp/toc.html , it mentions that "concerns related to the concomitant use of vitamin B6 and the promotion of heart muscle and valve fibrosis by 5-HTP seem to have no basis in fact. It is conceivable that these problems could arise if there were excess peripheral serotonin. But, since very little serotonin is produced from 5-HTP outside of the central nervous system, the danger seems remote at best."

You may want to check out the website I listed it also has a section on Tryptophan. Tryptophan is NOT a better alternative to 5htp in my opinion. Also, in my experience most drs in the u.s. have little or no knowledge about 5htp, this is something you will have to research yourself. But you've come to the right place for good information and advice. Good luck, I hope your son feels better.
