Topic Title: proper use?
| | "proper use?" , Mon 2 Jul 15:27
I have another question if I might... The depression I'm experiencing is the result of an event that occurred a few months ago. I do not have (as far as I know) and have never had any other problems with depression. Is 5-HTP appropriate for just trying to make it through a really difficult time? Does "situational depression" effect serotonin levels? Again, thanks so much for your time and info.

While depression is mostly a chemical problem, it can also be "triggered" very easily by certain events in ones life. It's much like driving along with no problems, and then suddenly your tire goes flat from running over a nail. The "nail" is the trigger. In other words, the event would cause chemical levels to drop low enough for the depression to occur.

Hate to disagree but I believe that depression is not always caused by a chemical imbalance. Sometimes we need to go through feelings. If someone you loved died, I would assume one would feel depressed. Because of the event. Not because of a chemical imbalance. The person would need to deal with the event and his/her feelings.

From all I've read, depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain. It doesn't matter if it is situational or not, it is depression. 5htp and talk therapy will probably help you.
