Hi

Just started taking 5HTP again after a trial on SJW. Does it kick in quickly? Like the same day? Can't remember from before.

Is the effect better once you've taken it for a while?

Also I've read that you have to take it for three months and then come off it for a while, then go back on. Is that correct?

Thanks

Everybody is different. Especially once you have taken other alternatives or meds. One might not notice a subtle reaction if it was not as powerful as a prescription med.
In my own case, and from much reading, people usually feel "something" within 20 minutes. I dont mean a joyous complete change, but a spark of ooomph if you will..maybe a smile...or a sudden thought to get something done. And as with many things, one pill does not change ones world. Its a work in progress. Luckily, in my case...it has been a very positive one.
Most people find a balance, a point where they feel better..it may be 50 mg a day, or 100 or more. Some find they do not need it daily. And of course if low Serotonin is not the culprit of ones anxiety or depression, the HTP will not do much.
Some people have taken it without fail or break and have had no issues. Some recommend a break. Some find that it's effects are not as strong after awhile and supplement with Tyrosine. (In fact the Tyrosine is rather an upper to increase the other neurotransmitters as the serotonin is at an even level in time) In my own case, the HTP still works just fine. Supplementing with Tyrosine only increases anxiety for me and I do well without it. See how you feel and give it time.

Something within 20 minutes sounds right. It's important to take it on an empty stomach or with protein-free, carbs reach meal or drink. This is important because tryptophan (5-htp) competes with another amino acids in the food.

If you don't notice any effects you might also want to give L-tryptophan a try. It's a bit different than 5-htp and some find it more suitable.
