I'm taking it to combat severe PMS (PMDD, if you will) but noticed that all of my non-emotional PMS symptoms became worse and started more than 7 days before my period. This included bloating, sore breasts, low back pain and cramps. My period also came late for no apparent reason other than the SJW since I'm not taking anything else. So, I was less of a monster during my mood swings, but ended up almost crippled by the other stuff.

I'm also trying to find out more information about this since I don't know if the benefits of SJW will outweigh these side effects in the long run - unless there are other treatments to counteract them (then you counteract the new side effects with more medication, and so on, and so on...!!! :P).

Anyway, I hope this info helps in your search for answers.

I was taking SJW for about a month and a half but decided to stop when I felt the side effects were as bothersome as my depression. Specially when it came to my period. I was also taking birth control pills and started to have irregular bleeding and spotting thru all that month. But, when my period was supposed to come it didn't. I did several pregnancy test just in case but all of them negative. Right now I decided to start another cycle of birth control pills to reset my system hoping I will get my period back. For the past 3 to 4 weeks I have been having cramps and feeling as bad as if I am going to get my peiod. I decided it was time to stop SJW. I did like the way I was feeling while on SJW but not so good when I started to have all this problems, so I stopped. Hope it helps.

During this time that I did not got my period I had to visit the doctor because I had one lymph node in the back of my neck that got really swollen. Since nothing different was happening in my life I can only think that it was the result of the stress SJW put in my system. Now that I am off of it my lymph node is going back to normal. But it really scared the hell out of me to have a lump on the back of my neck. After investigating in some books I found out that drug sensibility can cause this.
I dont want to blame SJW for all this, but the dose I was taking. I think 3 pills a day was probably to much for me. Now that I am off I can notice how my anxiety, depression and mood swings are coming back. I will really like to find something that I can take. Dont know if starting with a smaller dose, maybe 1 a day for a while, then go for 2 (I know 3 is too much for me). What do you think? Should I try again? Have you try something else like kava-kava or 5 htp? Let me know, thanks

I'd be pretty scared, too! I'd almost hesitate to say that a lower dose would be safer because something like a swollen lymph gland could be cumulative and recur over time at lower doses. What did your doctor say about these symptoms? I think that maybe if you are that sensitive to SJW you should probably look into trying something different. But if you decided you absolutely wanted to try SJW again, I would only do so under your doctor's supervision - hopefully he/she is open-minded enough to help you with this. Other than that, I've run out of advice because I'm new at this too and don't have a whole lot of experience with any other herbal anti-depressants! I'm just hoping it works well enough for me so I don't have to move up to the prescription stuff.

Best of luck to you!

Susan

I first posted about the cramps and bleeding over a month ago, and since then I have been diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst. (This could also be the cause of my bleeding/ cramping.) I am trying to set up surgery to have it removed within the next few weeks, and will keep you posted on whether or not this relieves the symptoms.
I hate to stop taking the St. John's Wort, because this is the only thing that has helped my depression. However, if any of you women find another herbal alternative, please let me know, and I will do the same.
Thanks bunches!
Gina

I NEVER had any problems like that before SJW. So, with all the other stuff included (sun sensitivity, etc.) that's just a few too many side effects for me to deal with. Not quite sure how to regulate my mood for the time being, so I'll really have to keep an eye on myself and make sure that if I'm feeling bad I don't act out and affect other people.

I'll definitely let you know if I find something good though - but most of my research so far is not getting me anywhere.

Good luck to all of us! :)

Susan

However since I have been taking B vit complex as well, I have noticed a definite improvement (or rather what anxiety/depression I do get is not worsened by being that time of the month.) I believe B vits are recommended for PMS anyway, and are definitely recommended by many on this site to help with anxiety/depression.

(I have taken every pharmaceutical anti- depressant on the market, with devasting emotional side- effects. Nothing else has worked as well as SJW.) However, if any of you women find another herbal alternative, please let me know, and I will do the same.
Thanks bunches!
Gina

I finally decided just last night to give up the SJW and search for something else. I kept having cramps and back pain (mid-cycle) and had some minor spotting.
