The best non prescription natural substance is not ST. Johns Wort it is 5 HTP. Trust me when I say I used to be the most happiest go lucky person on this earth. Every one would say how the hell do you stay so happy and content. It was just a natural way for me to be. Then as I got older around 22 I started experimenting with Cocaine. Never got addicted just did it socially and had a good time with it. Because I never got addicted I never thought that any serious side effects would occur. I only did it every so often but a very serious side effect occurred actually a few. First I started getting anxiety attacks, I started becoming unsociable, I started getting migraines and became very nervous and paranoid. I became angry and my sleeping patterns were a mess. I developed serious depression. I never ate and lost so much weight. I hated life and thought if something didn't change soon I might end my life. I couldn't believe that I had come from being class clown and most sociable confident person that could go to out to a club in Manhattan by herself and have the best time to not ever wanting to leave my bed for fear of anxiety attacks. I hated life, I hated my friends, I hated my family because no one could understand me and no matter what I did or took (St. Johns Wort) Nothing helped me until I discovered the reason why I was that way.

All those symptoms: Depression, Anxiety, Sleeping Disorders, Eating Disorders, Stress. Are all from a lack of serotonin in your brain. In my research I read that Cocaine, alcohol abuse and a high intake of carbohydrates plus lack of eating meat which contains proteins are all causes of low serotonin in the brain.

5 HTP is a natural chemical in the brain that helps to balance and raise your Serotonin levels. This substance is available in over the counter medicines. I have found that Kal beyond 5 HTP is the best because it gives the best combination of ST.Johns Wort. 5-HTP and other natural emotional balancing herbs and vitamins. Please do all the research you can on 5 HTP and you will see as I have that is gets nothing but great praises from any one and every one who has ever used it. I myself feel Like I used to when I was a teenager and had all the happiness in the world. I feel so good I thank all the doc's and people who have brought 5 HTP to the surface for us to be able to get w/o a prescription. Trust me when I say you will feel like a kid again after taking this product. Some people get slow results usually 2 months after they start to really see the difference and some people feel it right away so if you take it and the first month or so its not hitting you trust me it will and one day you will wake up and think God this is what I have been waiting for this freedom and this release of all my worries and fears. You will sleep better, eat better and feel socially open and happy.

I just want to share this with everyone and anyone. I wish I travel all over the world and tell every person that is feeling the way that I had been feeling about 5 HTP. It could help drug addicts, smokers, weight loss, depressed children ( read the label for age range) and such because it really helps you get back the confidence you used to have before life turned you upside down.

Thanks

Star

I think I am still in denial that I am depressed but I do realize that I need some help in dealing with "Life" for my sake and my childrens. Zoloft has helped me but my insurance will not cover any of the cost and my budget can't afford it. Where do I go from here. I have read that 5HTP is great for those with Bipolar disorder which seems to affect me more than feelings of being depressed. My mood swings are atrocious, calm and collective one minute and five minutes later I am ready to pull my hair out. I believe most of this is caused because I care for my children on my own and the emotional, financial and physical burden is just sometimes to much to bare, but this is my life and I have to live it the best way I possibly can. I think I am ready to try the 5HTP and I hope I will get good results. Does anyone have a brand that I could start out with. Thanks to everyone for all the comments and advise posted on this site and special thanks to Kelly for starting it.

Sunne

I have a boyfriend, definitely the MOST serious in my 28 years. We are so happy, but both prone to stress. I found out some news with regards to my boyfriend, that was bad. News that doesn't REALLY affect me, things BEFORE he and I, but nonetheless that make my stressed. I am in the US, but am canadian = VISA stress. I happen to be a registered dietitian, so I can help you with that one.

Rule #1:
DONT DIET, EVER!

Rule #2:
Work on making lifestyle changes. I have no idea what your eating patterns/selections and portions are like, but I can offer you some general suggestions. Focus on eating a HEALTHIER diet that is better for your body and mind by eating more vegetables, whole grains, legumes and fruits and less foods of animal origin (meats and dairy). Vegetarians (particularly vegans who don't eat animal products) tend to weigh less (about 15% on the average) than non-vegans/vegetarians. If you like fish, fine. If you are a big meat eater and milk and cheese lover that try to gradually REDUCE those foods as much as possible.

But, don't say to yourself, "okay, I'm going to give this up or give that up." Tell yourself you can eat anything you want at anytime (AND YOU CAN), but TRY to eat less and less of the foods that I have mentioned (for several reasons-I can elaborate on this later if you wish). And, at the same time, add a fruit, vegetable, legume or whole grain to 1-2 meals per day or try some of these foods as a snack.

RULE #3:
Eat less total fat. Monitor your total fat and try to keep it under 50 grams per day but not less than roughly 30 grams. You don't have to count exactly, just estimate. Try baking foods instead of frying. Purchase low or nonfat liquid margarines to use on toast, vegetables, etc., instead of butter or regular margarine. Read labels-look for "hidden fats" in foods.

RULE #4: EXERCISE!!! Find something YOU LIKE or don't mind doing, and/or find yourself an exercise buddy or class, and do some form of exercise at lease 3-5 days per week for 20-30 minutes each day.

RULE #5: Do NOT weigh yourself on a daily basis. Either judge your progress by how your clothes fit you, or weigh yourself no more than once a week, if you must.

RULE #6: Do not attempt to lose more than 1-2 pounds per week. More than 2 pounds of weight loss per week= to much muscle mass lost-and muscles burn calories!

I suspect I had symptoms prior to that, but didn't know enough to recognize them until it got REALLY bad--suicidal, major weight loss, general inability to function. I finally got help, which included Paxil. A terrific doctor, my counselor, some really great friends, and Paxil saved my life. When I got better, I swore I would never let myself slip to that level ever again. About 2 years ago, I starting slipping and have felt like I've been sitting on the edge ever since. Because I educated myself about depression, I've been able to recognize the symptoms and exercise some precautions, but I just can't seem to get my once-happy life back again. I monitor such things as exercise, social activities, work regiment, sleep patterns, eating patterns, moods, etc., and doing so has kept me from going completely off the deep end. I'm tired of not being myself though. I want the "old me" back.

Paxil was a good choice for me 6 years ago, but I experienced side effects that I don't care to repeat if I can avoid it. This afternoon I spent several hours searching for a psychiatrist in my area that specializes in depression and takes a wholistic approach to its treatment. I found a few, but ran out of time before getting around to calling any of them. Meanwhile, I decided to do some searching of my own and found this website. Now I am anxious to learn more about 5-HTP. In fact, I may make a trip to my local GNC to see what I can come up with tonight! Meg--You mentioned you had started taking something recommended by a friend at GNC, but I think the message may have been a bit garbled. Would you mind repeating what your friend recommended?

As Peggy mentioned, maybe we can compare notes and provide mutual moral support as we work through this. Good luck to all.

Hey everyone! I'm new to this site and just looking for a better insight on natural remedies for my mild depression, anger, drastic mood changes, and etc. I am going to see a counselor on Tuesday but was wanting to try some natural supplements before seeking drugs. I hate the thought of drugs and etc. They are dangerous and are man-made. We'll see! As soon as my daughters wake up I'm going to make a trip up to gnc and get some St. John's wort also and see if that helps. I took 5htp a few months ago but didn't didn't help a whole lot so maybe I could take st. john's wort to increase the affect. I was only taking my 100 mg 5htp once a day. What do you guys think??

Hiya,

I took 5htp for a few months and it took a few weeks to kick in and I must admit I did feel quite good for a while, however the effects diminshed and I stopped taking it after about 4 months. At the time I combined it with valarian which really seemed to calm me, I used the liquid form (doesn't taste very nice but more potent than tablet form), they seemed to work well together. However if it didn't help much the first time round maybe you should try a different brand that might help, some seem to work others don't, depending on the individual.

I didn't combine it with sjw but I have just been reading up on some of the past posts on here on amoryn which combines sjw with 5htp and a few other ingredients along with some vitamins (check out the past posts kelly has painstakingly brought here for us), which will help with your question.

Hope it works for you, takecare pixy :freak4:

I've been taking st john's wort 2x a day with 5htp but it's making me really tired and exhausted. Any idea on what else I can do to boost my energy levels? Is it okay to take B vitamins with this? Fish oil?

Hiya,

Maybe your taking a little too much, maybe you should cut your 5htp down to 50mg instead of the 100mg you have been taking. I take a number of vitamins due to the fact I'm a vegan, I take omega 3,6,9 (non fish ones) a vitamin b complex, vitamin c and a multivitamin once a day. Sounds alot I know but better that than me have brittle bones!!.

As for you feeling tired I would definately try and cut down on the amount you are taking see if that helps, trial and error I'm afraid. The vitamins shouldn't interfere with the sjw or 5htp I asked both my pharmacist and the health food shop if any would and they assured me that they wouldn't. Hope you feel better soon, takecare.

Hi, with reference to you feeling tired blessings2mom i got some 5-htp tablets that were 100mg and i take these on the night with 2-300mg SJW but i started feeling really lethargic, not neccesarily tired like i wanted to sleep but more lazy tired. I started to break the tablets in half and just take 50mg of the 5-htp a night and i feel better for it, much happier overall.
Also the amount of SJW i am taking is working really well for me. I take it only at night as i found that taking SJW in the morning or day also made me feel tired.
Its a nice combination taking the SJW and 5-htp at night and it certainely knocks me out into a good nights sleep!
Good luck

I feel like a herbal medicine cabinet. I started adding the fish oil, b-complex, my multivitamin, the 5htp, and the sjw. Is there anyway they make a vitamin that has all this in it?? I dont like having to take several different ones everyday. HELP!! Has anyone tried the clarocet or amoryn? Any others you know of?
