I have a question for ya... But first here's the story I've been taking 30mg of Celexa for awhile know and I'd been expierencing severe anxiety and some panic attacks. So, desparate for something to help, I took 25mg of htp5 for acouple of days and felt wonderful. I haven't felt so "normal" in a very long time!! And then one day I was really moody and realized that that was a symptom of seratonin syndrome so I quit taking the HTP5. I continued being moody for about a week and slept for about 15hrs a night/day and felt very very depressed! And another week has passed and I still feel moody and tired all the time. On the brighter side, I'm not experiencing any anxiety!

Does taking Htp5 for acouple of days have longterm affects on seratonin?

The little I know about seratonin and norapinephrine, seratonin helps relieve anxiety and panic and norapinephrine helps with tiredness and motivation...
So, by supplementing htp5 to help with seratonin, could I have accidentaly messed with my norapinepherine levels?

And is it possible that hpt5 supplementation could have some long term effects in the brain? (if so, it would be exciting to think about the possibilities about amino acid therapy!!! eh?)

P.S.
(Most of the time it's not recomended to take seratonin-affecting meds and HTP5, and I wouldn't recomend it. However...) Sometimes a naturopathic doctor will recomend a VERY small amount of htp5 and other amino acids to help restore neurotransmitters to more normal levels. I decided to combind htp5 with my SSRI without a trained medical professional. It was stupid and would never recomend it.

I really doubt it. In fact Serotonin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serotonin) is being produced in your body all the time. Haven't heard of any long-term problems with 5-HTP, especially if you only took it for a few days.

Might be a better question for a scientist or clinical psychiatrist... I think you'll be just fine. :)

Sounds like good advice to me... it's always better not to combine drugs that try to do the same thing, unless there's been significant research with specific drugs for this.

In completely unrelated reseach on "nootropics," including types of drugs that are sometimes used to treat people with alzheimer's, some drugs were found to be much more effective (by orders of magnitude) when taken in combination with another specific drug... like 4X more effective. I found that interesting.

But for our case, depression, which is quite different, I have never heard this to be true and may quite likely cause more problems than it solves. I'd never combine an SSRI or any other prescribed antidepressant with other options without full consultation with a doctor.
