If you are reading this Pixiebell I am interested having read that you are a vegan.

For the past 10 years I have been a lacto vegetarian, I dont eat meat, fish, eggs etc, but I do take some milk sometimes, but not alot, mainly just the odd bit of cheese. This timing does coincide with problems I have had.

Anyway the reason I was interested to talk to you is because i looked into 5htp and it is based on tryptophan being a precursor of serotonin isnt it.

Well I was interested to find out that tryptophan is an essential amino acid, a part of protein that cant be made in the body but has to be ingested. Well looking into my vegetarian dietary habits and looking at the recommended amounts of things that the body needs to function, it seemed to make alot of sense to me that I would be lacking in serotonin if I wasnt gettng enough of all the essential amino acids, due to a low protein intake.

I found that the rda is 40-50g of protein a day, which there is NO way my mostly carbohydrate laden diet was providing me with.

4 oz cheese is only 20g protein, and you have to eat a whole lot of pulses and rice to get the rda and all the essentail amino acids including tryptophan to reach the rda.

For the last month I am trying to redress the balance by weighing out my food and making sure I get 15g of protein at each meal sitting 3 times a day.

In fact it might not just be vegetarians who may be over eat carbs instead of protein, due to health scares about red meat and things, most people seem to think they are being healthier eating lots of brown bread fruit and veg than protein sources. Even meat eaters might find if they do some calculations that they are not meeting the rda of protein unless they eat a good portion of meat at each of 3 meals a day.

If this is the case and so many people say that the tryptophan in 5HTP is helping them feel better, maybe this could be achieved also by looking at diet and making sure that enough protein is being taken?

What do you think?

Hiya sim,

I think you have some great points and maybe we should all take a little look at what we put in our mouths. I turned veggie at 12 and vegan 2 years later and have never had any problems with my diet, I have great hair that reaches my bottom and my nails grow at the rate of knots, its me thats the problem I'm afraid!. The biggest problem is when you feel down and depressed food is the last thing on your mind and it goes completely out the window.

I have been having problems with my diet for a while now due to the fact my appetite has gone along with my sense of humour and everything else. I recently seen a doctor about my diet as I like you got a little worried (a friend pointed out I maybe suffering from b12 deficency THANKS HARVEY!!!) and so I went for some advice and some blood test to see if thats the case. Research shows that veggies and vegans lack vit b12 found in most meat and symptoms are similar to those of depression. I have lost a bit of weight and can't seem to find any enjoyment from food, he recommended a BINBAG full of vitamins and a chat with my health food shop. Who by the way are good with advice if anyone is a bit unsure of rda's and what they should be taking I would highly recommend you spend 10 minutes or so with someone who knows what they are talking about! as there are so many out there its a mine field.

I have been taking a slow release vitamin for years however it doesn't have the rda for what I need. I now take a vit b12 complex, vitamin c, vitamin e, slow release multi vit and a vegan omega 3,6 and 9. This may look a lot but as my diet right now is so poor I need all the help I can get.

I did take 5htp for 4 months however after 3 and a half the effects diminshed and I was back to feeling pretty awful, however, the effects were good and for the first time in ages I felt great, even my sleeping was improving. I think your research is great and maybe when I am feeling like I want to eat properly again I will look at what I intake.

Thanks for your valid post its nice to know we are all singing from the same hymn sheet thanks sim!. Keep me posted how you get on with the protein it will be good to see some positive results that could help us all.
