It seems that some say great and others are alarmed. Also, how about doctors from other parts of the world? England, Canada, Australia, USA, etc?

He said, no matter what I do, to do it for three months at least. He also told me that if I had trouble getting off of it, or it stops working, to come back and see him. I figured he would look down on SJW, but he really didn't. I live in the USA.

I went to see my doctor fully prepared to go back onto seroxat (paxil) but he mentioned SJW, saying that a recent study had shown it to be as effective as anti-depressants, and that he was happy to recommend i try it. SJW is not available on prescription here, so it was up to me to find out what form to take it in and what brand, which is largely trial and error. i found after 6 -8 weeks i did have a very noticeable improvement, but in the last week or so it doesn't seem to be as effective. i'll probably give it a few more months, maybe switch brands, but if it doesn't turn out to be helpful in the long run, i've no problem with going back on seroxat.

Story short my doctor said "st johns wart is a great herb" with passion, she said "but I need to go to a natropath and that I cant just go get some and just take it". She told me about some guy who was so great and they use to to work togeth but she couldnt even remember his first name. She said its a bit slow working though :spin: . I expected it to take some time but I was one of the lucky ones who it worked for in a day.

I am also in the UK. My general practitioner didn't say much when I told him I was takng the SJW, but said if it helps, then carry on. My psychologist/therapist, who is German, though it was great that I'd taken SJW before taking the prescribed anti D,s.

I'm in the US and have an on-and-off 15+ year history with doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists, but seen any in over 3 years now (I no longer have health insurance).

At least 75% have given me perscriptions for something (welbutrin, ritalin, paxil, lithium, at least 3 others that I can't remember). Not a single one recommended SJW. I've talked to a couple about using supplements and the response was about the same as if I'd said I was going to improve my diet (a very un-impressed and 'that's not going to fix it' attitude).

Now on the other hand, I had a psychiatrist, after a single 40 min session (including a 15 minute debate over what the term 'distracted' means) hand me a week's supply of lithium to try out. I read the insert that said kidney function should be monitored before and while taking it. When I asked her about that we finished the session out with a nice 5 minute debate about why I wasn't going to just start popping pills that say they can trash my kidneys right on the box. Her opinion was that if I just took the pills I would feel better about taking the pills. My opion was ... well, not fit to put on the internet.

So, things in the US might have changed in the last 3 years. But my experience has been that they would rather rack up perscriptions than suggest any herbal supplement.

Also, (for the record), I used the webutrin (triying to stop smoking) and tried the ritalin. The other scripts were tossed in the trash and never filled after I researched the side affects.

My Doctor suggested trying SJW before trying prescriptions. This in itself impressed me about her. It is working for me. It took a couple of weeks, (i see some posts that say they got immediate relief) but I can see a positive difference. I hear the prescriptions mimick what the SJW does, so I thought try nature before man made. I am glad i gave it a try. I read about it years ago....bought a bottle, and It sat in my cabinet. (i'm not good taking any kind of pills) When my doctor suggested it, i checked the bottle. I think it expired 3/4 years ago. Boy if I had trusted my own gut and just stayed with it then.......well hindsight is 20/20. But I am faithful in taking it now....yahooo!
