I have recently discovered a book that has given me insight of the many problems people experience on this forum. It is an amazing book and has even been made into a movie. It is called "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne. This book is about the Law of Attraction and how it is constantly being used in everyday life. You must be thinking that the Law of Attraction is some sort of seduction book out there but it is not. The only way for you to discover it is to read about it. There are also other books out there about the Law of Attraction, but i believe this is a great place to start.

I would recommend you to buy the book as I did because I find it easier to read the book than online. But I have recently found a website where you can read the entire book online. It is a great book so please have some faith and read it. I hope it will change you as it did me.

I have the book The Secret. I Believe and I don't. Check out Chasers The Secret on You TUbe if you like a good laugh.
But I do believe in the law of attraction. How has it changed your life?

1) Napoleon Hill's book "Think and Grow Rich" was the original book on the subject (growing rich means more than just money to him and many others by the way) and was written nearly a century ago. "The Secret" and many other such self-improvement books are merely a rehash of Hill's seminal work.

2) You say the book "has given me insight of the many problems people experience on this forum." I'm almost afraid to ask, but here goes: what insight into depression and anxiety do you now have as a direct result of reading that book?

Just to start off Jason...have you even read the book or seen the movie? If you have then you must have not gotten anything out it...which is understandable as the concepts can be confusing to some

1) I am aware of Napoleon Hill's book and have read that as well. The Secret however is a combination of Napoleon Hill's book along with other books such as The Master Key System by Charles F. Haanel. The author of the Secret has taken the same concept of other books and has compiled it into a single work.

2) If you have read the book and understood it (which I think you didn't) then you would be able to easily connect the teachings of the book to the problems that people experience. Most people who fall into a depression or have anxiety or panic attacks have them as a result of their thoughts and thinking patterns.

What the Secret teaches you is that basically "Thoughts are things." You are in control of your own destiny. Whatever you truly believe in your mind can become your reality if you really "believe." If you read the book you will understand it a lot more. As Napoleon Hill states in his book, "Whatever the mind can conceive and believe the mind can achieve." So if you are depressed or suffer from anxiety, you should imagine your life as you want it to be (it will take some deep thinking) and believe as though you are living the life that you want to live. Try this for a week at least...I guarantee you will see change. There is no harm in trying.

I am always slightly wary about books that purport to have 'all the answers'. Looking for a book to change your life seems naiive to me - in the extreme.

Having said that, I've not read this particular book, so I couldn't really comment, other than to say take any excessive claims it may make with a pinch of salt.

If you are from England - (I'm not) did you watch The Chasers The Secret on You Tube? You have to!
I just love the Law of Attraction!! I do wonder about the attitude it might create - like maybe it will create political apathy - and uncaringness. Maybe it encourages a blame the victim attitude? Like those people are starving because they didn't have positive thoughts?
That has just always bothered me a bit about NewAge beliefs.
I am a tiny bit interested in Buddhism, and may look into it....

Yes, in a way, this book does just that. It's been a while since I read it, but I do recall that there is something about victims of disasters, mass murders, etc, were where they were at that moment because of their thoughts. I don't have the book anymore, otherwise, I'd type out the exact quote.

It was at that point that I knew the book was not for me. How someone could write something so terribly calloused and ignorant is beyond me; worse is that people are literally buying this stuff. I know that Oprah was quite enthusiastic about it--I'd like to ask her if victims of slavery or lynchings or racism in general are responsible for their experiences.

The main thesis of the book isn't so bad. Yes, positive thoughts do have a positive effect on us. No, they are not going to change everything, they're not going to end a bad situation, they're not going to cure every single ailment, but they are good for you. The idea has already been covered by lots of other authors, some of them noted here. Norman Vincent Peale also wrote about it in a book called Positive Imaging.

Rubbish, in my opinion. And yes, it blames victims. Nice, huh?

Yes, I agree with you, BelleKelle. Positive thoughts do help.
But why do these 'spiritual people' visualize 10,000 square foot houses and tons of money? It is so narcissistic!
I am not trying to pick on you, NewAge - I just think we need more scepticsm, and needf to think critically. There is a great book by Carl Sagan called 'The Demon Haunted World' that addresses the paranormal and 'belief.'
ANyway -fun thread!

I agree with some of your posts. The Law of Attraction did seem shady to me at first, but as I really got into it, I have definitely seen change. Whether you believe in the law of attraction or not, never doubt the power of positive thinking. Positive thinking has changed my life and that is the main aspect of the secret that has helped me to achieve positive results in my life. Something that has helped me deal with negative thoughts is that whenever I catch a negative thought slip into my head, I replace it with two positive ones. Positive thinking is Key to succeeding in anything.
