Began taking Borleans pharmaceutical grade fish oil recently and it has done wonders for my depression. It also appears to be effective in alleviating some of my anxiety too. I recently purchased Barry Sears book (Omega Zone) and he recommends high-dose levels to treat more severe problems like, depression, ADHD, and Alzheimers. The standard dose is one teaspoon and he recommends starting out with one tablespoon, which is about 10 grams of Omega 3. He insists it's safe to take as much as 25 grams a day, if someone has very depleted Omega 3 levels. I'm taking 10 grams and it works great. He thinks most people don't get much benefit from fish oils because they don't choose a quality product and they take too little of a dose. He also recommends fish oil and not the capsules.

The Borleans is infused with orange and I get no fish taste at all. No burping of fish oil later, either. Make sure you get pharmaceutical grade for purity of toxins. And frankly, for you vegetarians out there you're gonna need to use fish oil if you want help from Omega 3's. Flax is has ALA, which converts to EPA and DHA, but it won't be enough.

Well, that makes sense, when you consider the clinical trials on omega 3's. They used very large doses like 10 grams of EPA. I've been taking fish oils for a long time, but never got up to that dose. The cost alone--with high quality capsules, that is--would be much too high.

Thanks for the recommendation on the brand. I'm going to check that out.

I think that vegetarians/vegans can check out blue/green algae, which is where the fish get the omega 3 in the first place. What you want to do with regard to omega 3's, is get something very low on the food chain, which is why sardines and anchovies are very often the fish used for high quality omega 3 supplements. The algae is even lower on the food chain. From what I recall, however, this is a very, very expensive alternative to the fish oils.
