Does anyone else hate their job? I'm really hating mine these days and it doesn't help the depression at all. Would like to get something else, but not feeling very optimistic because the economy is so bad here. :frown:

I'm more or less in the same boat. I work in the IT field (computers), and basically it's not everything it's cracked up to be. I'm not a fan of corporate culture, and in the company I work for, IT is seen as something of a necessary evil or "red-headed stepchild." Add to that the facts that I have a less-than-wonderful boss, and am quite a bit underpaid (about half of what my position generally pays...I have no certifications as of yet), and yeah, I hate my job. Right now there's really nothing better though, at least not around here, so it just kind of makes me feel trapped.

300 Best Jobs Without a Four-Year Degree (Second Edition), by Michael Farr with database work by Laurence Shatkin, Ph.D.

This is the only book I have yet found which is in any way helpful for me during this time, I think it's especially important to consider a job which will still be around during a recession and/or depression. "Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator" is the job I am considering most right now, because depression or no depression, "people are still going to be drinking water and flushing toilets no matter," like the dude told me at the local Wastewater Treatment Plant where I was asking questions. The book is full of useful lists, I hope it can help someone the way it is me. :spin:

"Most men would feel insulted if it were proposed to employ them in throwing stones over a wall, and then throwing them back again, merely that they might earn their wages. But many are no more worthily employed now." ---Henry David Thoreau

I didn't hate my job. I just got to the stage where being stuck in an office for eight hours per day, answering phones / e-mails and generally just being on my mettle all the time was just too stressful and the whole thing ultimately became completely untenable. I couldn't have carried on even if I'd wanted to.

I think the longer you stay with one particular employer, the more you become 'institutionalised'. You can't see yourself working anywhere else or trying something new - you just get this tunnel vision and keep trying to plough on regardless. Better the devil you know, sort of thing...

For better or for worse, I am trying to move on. Having worked as a housing manager for the past twenty years, I am hoping to become a self-employed van driver in the very near future. It's a huge leap into the unknown, but anything was better than sticking with the status quo...
