Hi, I take 5-htp on and off for a few years. I agree with other posts on here, that it only works temporarily, but when it did work, it was amazing. it worked for three months for me. So anyway, I want to try the natural approach to depression before i go back to the antidepressants. i herad tryptophan works well for depression and sleep, two problems of mine. I was wondering if tryptophan would work considering 5-htp stopped working, because i heard 5-htp IS basically the tryptophan working for the depression...anyone know?

5htp is the precursor to tryptophan.

What dosage of 5htp were you taking for the effects to wear off?

Hm, possibly.

It is worth a try though.

There are other supplements which can help with depression - sam-e is one that I've heard of and there's always St Johns Wort, although I didn't find that as effective as 5htp.

Have you ever given Rhodiola Rosea a go? I take that each morning and the 5htp at night and I've been fine for about 7 months now. Perhaps the two combined might work. Rhodiola Rosea is good for depression, chronic tiredness and lack of motivation. It's fantastic stuff and it's really helped me get my life back together.

Give the tryptophan a go and see how you get along.
