Hi to all,
I have just started to take 5-htp & I must admit that it is making me feel more anxious at the moment, but I am going to carry on taking them 50g to 100g a day, I want to know how they react with alcohol, mostly beer as I like to have a drink at the weekends.
I also take RR which has given me more energy & has improved my sex drive!
Thanks.

I'm taking 5HTP and RR, and other herbs and supplements. When I drink after a certain amount of drinks I can remember nothing of what I did, and am told of my bizarre and insane behaviour. I think the 5HTP mainly causes this but it could be a combination of factors.

The combination of 5-HTP and RR might be the cause of your anxiety resulting in seritonin syndrome(too much seritonin). I think you should only do one at a time so that you can accurately judge how 5-HTP affects your body.
In the past I drank alcohol while taking 5-HTP without any ill effects. But everyone is different. I never too 5-HTP and RR together.

RR and 5HTP don't cause serotonin syndrome, I'm certain of that. I've taken 100 mg of 5HTP and 1650 mg of RR, aling with 30 mg of mirtazapine (Remeron) for at least six months without getting SS. Taking a MAOI and an SSRI or SJW could cause SS, but not RR and 5HTP.

5htp gave me anxiety at first too, especially when I took more than 50mg a day. What helped me was to reduce my dose to 50mg and stay on it for a whole week before I increased my dosage another 50mg. If 50mg still gives you anxiety, start with 25mg (split the pill, or empty one half of a capsule in water). Pretty soon, once your body adjusts to more serotonin, you might begin to feel tired, but that effect goes away. I think after 2 weeks, my anxiety subsided (both my own and the side-effects of 5htp).
Also, 5htp wears off after about 2 months. I started taking it in August and have been on it for 4 months. When it pooped out, I lowered my dosage for a month (went from 200mg down to 100mg). However, it took me a couple months to get to 200mg. It's good to take things slowly. Hope that helps.

Many thanks for your replies,
I will take things slowly with 5-HTP & take 50mg for about a week or so then I may raise it to 100mg. I will carry on with the RR 250mg for the time being or should I raise this amount as well ?

As I said, I was taking 100 mg 5HTP + 1650 mg RR + 600 mg tramadol + 30 mg mirtazapine with no problems. RR doesn't cause SS at doses 1650 mg or lower, and probably not at all. 100 mg of 5HTP is a low dose, some people take 1000 mg without any problems. So even if you take 100 mg 5HTP and 1000 mg RR you'll be very, very unlikely to encounter any problems.

I've drank a couple of beers or a couple of glasses of wine while on 5-htp, but did not experience any side effects from it.
