I have been taking 5 htp for about 2 months and all I can say is this is a miracle. My main problem was anxiety and my anxiety is virtually gone. I feel totally comfortable around strangers now, where I have never in my life been comfortable around people I didn't know.

Oh, I need to try this! I have always had anxiety around people so I usually just avoid social situations. How long after you started taking it did you notice its effects? What dosage are you taking? Are you taking anything else with it?

For me, from the first day I started taking 5htp I noticed an effect. I am so thankful that I have discovered 5htp. I feel such a natural mood upliftment from it. Currently I am taking 400mg a day (200mg mornings, 200mg nightime). I plan to gradually increase this dosage over time. I have been taking 5htp for about 1 1/2 years now and started off at about 100mg per day.
I have found that DMAE is a good combination to use with 5htp.

I read on the box of 5-htp that it may curb your appetite and can be used as a "diet"pill. I am more interested in using it for depression/anxiety and not to curb my appetite ( my appetite isn't all that good already). Can anyone let me know if 5-htp has made you less hungry or have lost weight on it? Thanks.

Yeah, I started just 4 days ago and I already noticed my meals went from 4 to 2 a day. I also eat less per meal. It may be because my depression is curbed but it seems to be a common side effect.

I've been taking the 5htp for a couple of weeks now and I'm not eating as much either! I don't know if it's going to help me lose weight, but I do feel so much better!
The Rhodiola Rosea is great stuff as well! I've stopped falling asleep during the day! It helps to curb the appetite as well.
Try taking some magnesium supplements too - this will help to stabilise the blood sugar levels and make cravings less likely.
Vitamin B6 helps to synthesise the 5htp too.

I have taken 5-htp for about two weeks and feel pretty good ( I take it at noon everyday, and don't eat for 30 minutes after or before). I also take B-vitamins, fish oil, and magnesium. I think that all that stuff just makes the 5-htp work better. I started taking 50mg, and after about 5 days began taking 100mg. I read that 100mg is a decent amount so I will probably stay at that. I noticed that when I drink a good amount of alcohol, over 6 drinks, it takes my body about two days to get back to feeling normal. If anybody taking 5-htp drinks often, then it may not have the same effects on your body as it would if you didn't consume alcohol. I plan on drinking occasionally, and when I do maybe no more than 2 drinks.

My problem is anxiety, i have just started on 50mg 5htp, i did notice a little difference although it was quite a few hours later. I tried taking 50 morning and night and had terrible anxiety. I think I need to take it slow. The company I buy mine from recomend 50-100 a day.

what tiype of anxiety did you suffer, was it panic, did you get the adrenal fight/flight feelings.
What dose did you start at and what are you on now. I am pretty desperate to stay of ssris so 5htp is a last resort. Thanks

I struggle daily with bad anxiety and depression now from the anxiety. How much 5 htp are you on? How much did you start with? My docotr put me on 400 mg made me feel very sick then I went down to 200 mg now for a week. It seems like it's incresed my anxiety so I don't know wether to lower it more or just keep it here and keep going longer. I have been on it for 2 weeks. I want this damned anxiety to go away. I got it 2 years ago and enough is enough. How bad was your anxiety?
My doctor as has me on mucuna pruiens it's for the dopamine supposed if only on 5 htp it can lower dopamine to much. Who knows?
Do you take 5 htp by itself?
I am sorry you have had to deal with this anxiety. I feel for anyone dealing with anxiety or depression or a daily basis. It screws your life up because it messes with your mind and all aspects of life no matter how strong minded you are.

5 HTP stopped working for me after a couple of months. I felt like a scientist constantly changing dosages to seek relief. I started to take fish oil shortly after. I have no anxiety at all anymore and it was because of the fish oil. My trigycerides were pretty high from all of the processed food I used to eat. The fish oil cut those numbers in half and I now have a good level of triglycerides. I don't know if the trigycerides were what caused the anxiety, but I definately don't have it anymore.
The fish oil takes a little while to take effect. I read a lot about fish oil and it is realatively safe in high dosages so starting with a higher dose may be a good idea.
My anxiety was pretty bad when I had it. I remember driving down a road and someone came up behind me and followed kind of close and my chest felt so tense and my hands sweated to the point I had to pull over. I could not go into public places because of the social anxiety. If I went to a public place I was so exhausted after I left.
I just want to say there is relief. Anxiety is mostly a nutritional problem. Everything you read on the net wants to attack anxiety it from the phsycological side. I lived with anxiety so long I could not imagine being with out it. I now have been free for over a year and am still amazed.
Pay very close attention to your diet and consider getting some good supplements.
Good luck

Randy - i think its great you are/were free from anxiety... and I agree only partially with your theory... I think nutrition is one of the TOP 3 the help ease anxiety - but it wont cure it....
